How to Make a Machine Look Like It’s Thinking About Something Else
A machine that is thinking about something else is not focused.
This is important.
Focus looks productive.
Productivity looks intentional.
Intention makes the machine feel like it is doing its job. To suggest distraction, the robot needs just enough disengagement. The head might be turned slightly away from the centre of the scene. Not enough to indicate avoidance, just enough to suggest its attention has drifted.
The body stays put while the mind wanders. Nothing is malfunctioning. Nothing is paused for a clear reason.
The robot is simply not fully present. This creates a small gap between what it is supposed to be doing and what it appears to be doing instead. That gap is where the thinking happens. If you can sense that the robot is occupied by something you cannot see and will never be told about, then it is working.
If you would like to spend time with machines that seem mildly preoccupied, there are more of them on this site and on my page www.instagram.com/vikoi1. Don't forget to give me a follow!
