My Work Reflects My Personality in Ways I’d Prefer It Didn’t

My work reflects my personality in ways I would prefer it did not. I usually notice it later, once there are enough pieces together that I can no longer pretend it is a coincidence.

The weirdness shows up.

Following from the last blog, a lot of this is unintentional. I do not sit down and decide to put my personality into the work. I am usually trying to do the opposite. I try to make something neutral and it quickly becomes weird. I try to make something confident and it ends up looking like it is waiting for permission.

The Next Piece

I sometimes tell myself the next piece will be different. More direct. Less revealing. It never is.

The work seems to carry the same habits I do, awkwardness, confusion, distraction. Art where nothing appears to happen but something definitely is. At this point I have accepted that the work reflects me even when I am trying for it not to.

If you want to see what that looks like when it becomes unavoidable, there is work elsewhere on this site.

I did not plan for it to be personal. It happened anyway.
