Some of My Favourite Images Look Calm and Feel Strange
Some of my favourite images look calm and feel strange. Nothing dramatic is happening. Everything appears under control. And yet something is slightly off.
I like that feeling.
It asks very little of you but still refuses to fully settle.
I have always been drawn to work where the surface is quiet but the logic is not. Salvador Dalí is an obvious example. Everything is rendered carefully, almost politely, while completely ignoring how reality usually behaves. That contrast sticks with me. I like images that look like they know what they are doing while quietly undermining themselves. Nothing explodes. Nothing announces itself. It just sits there, calmly confusing you.
That is the balance I keep coming back to in my own work. Familiar forms doing something slightly unhelpful. A calm composition carrying a strange feeling that does not need to be explained. If you want to see how this shows up in the work I make, there are pieces elsewhere on this site that look relaxed but are not entirely comfortable.
They are not trying to disturb you.
They just are.
