Someone mentioned recently that my art work made them feel awkward. I am a very awkward person so maybe it spills out of me more than I realised. Here is what has been going on my brain recently.
I've always been drawn to things that are two things at once.
These little robots are cute. I know they are. I made them that way deliberately with round heads, wide eyes, that particular kind of smallness that makes you want to protect something. When people see them they smile and that was always part of the point.
But I put them at the base of something enormous and dark and completely indifferent to them. That gap between how something looks and what it is actually living inside is something I know very well. I have spent a lot of my life appearing fine. Presenting something round and wide-eyed to the world while standing at the edge of something that felt much bigger than me.
What I didn't want to do was make something purely dark. The green is real too. It grows through the black because that is what I have found to be true, that life insists on itself even inside the overwhelming things.
A Cute Darkness is what it feels like to be small and mechanical and present in front of something vast.
